Jerusalem Drains the Cup of Wrath—and the Cup Is Taken Away

Isaiah 51:17–23 is a distinct movement within Isaiah’s book of comfort and new-exodus hope. It centers on Jerusalem Drains the Cup of Wrath—and the Cup Is Taken Away. In Isaiah’s own horizon, the Creator-Redeemer promises return from exile, confronts idols, raises Cyrus for a historical task, and unfolds the mission of the Servant. This unit shows how the book sets human pride, false refuge, or covenant failure against the LORD’s holiness, judgment, saving action, and promised restoration. Later canonical uses are explained separately: explicit New Testament interpretation is labeled explicit, while echoes, trajectories, and foreshadowing are kept at their proper evidence level.
