They Will Look on the One Pierced and Mourn
The tone changes radically. God pours on the house of David and Jerusalem ‘the spirit of grace and of supplications,’ and the people look upon the pierced one and mourn with the intensity of grief for an only or firstborn son. The mourning spreads through families and clans—David, Nathan, Levi, Shimei, and all remaining families—each grieving deeply. Victory is therefore not the final word; recognition, grace, and repentance are central to restoration.
Where Scripture takes it next: John 19:37 explicitly quotes the pierced-one text after Jesus’ side is pierced at the crucifixion. Revelation 1:7 reuses the same language in a vision of the returning Christ and worldwide mourning. These are explicit Christological applications.
