The Ancient of Days and One Like the Son of Man
The vision abruptly shifts from beastly violence to a heavenly courtroom. Thrones are placed, the Ancient of Days sits in fiery majesty, countless attendants stand before him, “the judgment was set,” and books are opened. Empire is not judged by another empire but by heaven’s court.
Then “one like the Son of man” comes with the clouds of heaven to the Ancient of Days and receives dominion, glory, a kingdom, and universal service from peoples, nations, and languages. His rule is everlasting and indestructible—the humanlike ruler stands in deliberate contrast to beastlike kingdoms.
Jesus connection — explicit canonical application: Jesus repeatedly calls himself “the Son of man,” and at his trial he joins Daniel 7’s cloud-coming figure with Psalm 110’s enthroned Lord. Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21, and Revelation 1 also reuse the cloud-coming imagery. This is not merely a later Christian resemblance; Daniel 7 becomes one of the New Testament’s central texts for understanding Jesus’ heavenly authority, vindication, coming, and kingdom.
