The LORD Returns to Zion: Old and Young in the Streets Again
Chapter 8 answers the grief of chapter 7 with a cascade of restoration promises. The LORD is fiercely jealous for Zion, returns to dwell in Jerusalem, and says the city will be called ‘a city of truth.’ The most memorable picture is intentionally ordinary: old men and women sit safely in the streets while boys and girls play there. After siege, exile, and depopulation, everyday life itself becomes a miracle.
Where this fits in the story: biblical restoration is not only temple ceremony or royal politics. It includes safety, long life, children, community, and truthful worship. The LORD promises to gather his people from east and west and renew the covenant formula: ‘they shall be my people, and I will be their God.’
