My Messenger, the Coming Lord, and the Refiner’s Fire
Malachi answers the demand for judgment with a promise of arrival: God will send “my messenger” to prepare the way, then the Lord sought by the people will suddenly come to his temple. Yet the coming day is not comfortable. It is refiner’s fire and fuller’s soap, purifying the sons of Levi and confronting sorcery, adultery, false oaths, wage oppression, abuse of widows and orphans, and injustice toward the stranger.
Where this fits in the story: Exodus 23:20 speaks of God sending a messenger before Israel, while Isaiah 40:3 announces a voice preparing the Lord’s way. Malachi gathers the messenger, way-preparation, temple, priesthood, covenant, and day-of-judgment themes into one scene.
