David Anointed, Firstborn, and Highest of Earth’s Kings
God recounts choosing and anointing David, strengthening him against enemies, and establishing a father-son relationship. The climactic royal language says, “I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth,” and promises that the covenant and seed will endure. “Firstborn” here is a royal status term, not a statement that David was literally the first child born.
Revelation 1:5 calls Jesus “the first begotten of the dead” and “the prince of the kings of the earth.” A dedicated study of Psalms in Revelation identifies Psalm 89 as a strong background for that royal combination. This is a strong biblical echo rather than a verbatim quotation, and it powerfully connects the Davidic firstborn/highest-king pattern with the risen Christ.
