Smyrna: Faithful Through Testing and Death
Revelation 2:8–11 speaks to suffering Smyrna through Jesus as the First and the Last, who was dead and is alive. The church is called to faithfulness even unto death and promised the crown of life. The warning that the conqueror will not be hurt by the second death sets present persecution against the final judgment later explained in Revelation 20.
2 Timothy’s crown for those who love Christ’s appearing resonates with Revelation’s call to faithfulness unto death and promise of the crown of life. The approved evidence supports this relationship while preserving the difference between direct quotation, canonical development, and interpretive inference.
James 1:12 and Revelation 2:10 share the distinctive promise of the “crown of life” to faithful endurance. The approved evidence supports the relationship at its existing confidence level without requiring a stronger quotation, fulfillment, or typology claim than the texts warrant.
Jesus again bears Isaiah's YHWH title 'the first and the last' in Revelation 2:8.
