God’s Righteousness through Jesus Christ
“But now” marks the great turn. God’s righteousness is manifested apart from works of law, yet the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it. All have sinned; justification is God’s gift by grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:25 calls Christ hilastērion. The Greek word can carry sacrificial atonement language and is also the word the Greek Old Testament uses for the ark’s atonement cover or “mercy seat.” That makes the Leviticus/Exodus resonance powerful, but the exact nuance is debated and should not be reduced to one English theological term. Paul’s main point is clear: God publicly presents Christ in relation to his blood to demonstrate divine righteousness in dealing with sin.
