Fifth Bowl: Darkness on the Beast's Kingdom and Refusal to Repent
Revelation 16:10–11 pours the fifth bowl upon the beast’s throne, plunging its kingdom into darkness. The darkness recalls Egypt’s plague, but here it strikes the center of the beast’s counterfeit rule. Pain does not produce repentance; the response is continued blasphemy, underscoring the hardened allegiance that Revelation has been exposing.
Darkness over the beast’s kingdom in Revelation 16 strongly recalls the Exodus plague of darkness over Pharaoh’s Egypt. In both scenes darkness functions as divine judgment against an oppressive realm, though Revelation relocates the motif into an eschatological conflict centered on the beast.
