Rend Your Heart: Return to the LORD
At the book’s darkest point comes the invitation: “turn ye even to me with all your heart.” Joel refuses empty performance—he says to rend the heart, not merely the garment. The reason repentance is possible is God’s own revealed character: gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in kindness, language rooted in the LORD’s self-proclamation after the golden-calf crisis in Exodus 34. The whole community is gathered, from elders to infants, bridegroom and bride. Priests stand between porch and altar and appeal not only for the people but for God’s name among the nations: “Where is their God?”
