The Rejected Son and the Stone the Builders Rejected
Jesus tells a parable of a vineyard owner who sends servants to receive fruit from tenants. The tenants beat and kill the servants. Finally the owner sends a beloved son, reasoning they will respect him; instead they kill him and throw him out. Jesus asks what the owner will do and then quotes Psalm 118: the stone rejected by the builders becomes the cornerstone.
Where this fits in the story: the vineyard strongly recalls Isaiah 5, where Israel is God’s vineyard and failed fruit brings judgment. Mark intensifies the pattern with rejected messengers and the beloved son, language that echoes Jesus’ baptism and transfiguration. Psalm 118 then turns rejection into divine reversal.
