Jesus Feeds Five Thousand in the Wilderness
The apostles return and report what they have done. Jesus tries to take them to a deserted place to rest, but a huge crowd arrives first. Mark says Jesus has compassion because they are like sheep without a shepherd. He teaches them, then takes five loaves and two fish, blesses, breaks, and gives through the disciples until five thousand men eat and twelve baskets remain.
Where this fits in the story: “sheep without a shepherd” recalls Israel’s need for faithful leadership, while the wilderness meal evokes God’s provision in the Exodus and later prophetic food miracles. The twelve baskets naturally resonate with the twelvefold people Jesus is gathering around himself.
