The Voice in the Wilderness Prepares the Way
John appears in the wilderness announcing, “Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew immediately identifies him through Isaiah 40: the voice preparing the way of the Lord. In Isaiah, that voice belongs to a new-exodus announcement—comfort after exile and the coming of God to lead his people home. John’s ministry therefore begins Matthew’s public story with repentance, return, and divine arrival.
Where this fits in the story: John’s wilderness setting and clothing also evoke Elijah, while the Jordan recalls Israel’s entry into the land and later prophetic activity.
