Athaliah Seizes the Throne; Joash Is Hidden
Athaliah tries to destroy the royal family, but the infant Joash is hidden in the temple and David’s line survives. Athaliah’s purge brings the Davidic dynasty to the edge of apparent extinction. The hidden survival, revelation, and coronation of Joash make this chapter crucial for the book’s Davidic covenant Thread: murderous politics cannot erase the promise God made to David.
Athaliah’s attempt to destroy the royal seed is one of Kings’ clearest demonstrations that God’s promise to David outlives murderous political schemes. The hidden preservation of Joash keeps the Davidic line alive despite a crisis that appears capable of extinguishing it.
Second Kings 11 preserves the Davidic dynasty through Athaliah’s attempted purge and the hidden survival of Joash; Matthew’s genealogy later presents that same royal line as culminating in Jesus. The theological continuity is strong, but Matthew’s genealogy may telescope generations, so the relationship is dynastic/canonical rather than a claim of exhaustive biological listing.
