Elisha and the Aramean Army
Elisha exposes Aramean plans, reveals the unseen heavenly army, blinds the soldiers, and turns captured enemies into banquet guests. Elisha’s ministry now ranges from an ordinary borrowed tool to international war and a horrific siege. The chapter places visible armies beside an unseen heavenly army, enemy mercy beside later starvation, and prophetic confidence beside royal despair.
Second Kings 6 uses the rare blindness vocabulary found in Genesis 19 when Elisha’s enemies are struck so they cannot recognize their surroundings. The lexical echo is strong even though the Sodom and Aramean narratives serve different immediate purposes.
Elisha’s command to feed captured Aramean enemies instead of killing them belongs to the same biblical mercy principle later stated in Proverbs 25 and quoted in Romans 12. The relationship is thematic/canonical: Kings dramatizes mercy toward enemies, Proverbs formulates the ethic, and Paul carries that principle into Christian practice.
