No Condemnation: The Spirit of Life in Christ
Romans 8 opens with “no condemnation” for those in Christ Jesus. What the law could not accomplish because of human flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and “for sin,” condemning sin in the flesh. The Greek expression translated “for sin” is repeatedly used in the Greek Old Testament for sin/purification offerings, giving the sentence a significant Levitical sacrificial resonance, though scholars debate how technically Paul intends the phrase here.
The chapter then contrasts the mind of the flesh with the mind of the Spirit. The Spirit is not an optional spiritual upgrade: belonging to Christ and having the Spirit are inseparable in Paul’s argument. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead will give life to believers’ mortal bodies.
