A Second Month So Faithful People Are Not Shut Out
Some men cannot keep Passover because contact with a corpse has made them ritually unclean. YHWH provides a second-month observance for people prevented by impurity or a distant journey, while still warning those who simply refuse the appointed feast. The law combines holiness with a carefully defined accommodation rather than treating every absence the same.
Christological mirror: verse 12 repeats the Passover rule that no bone of the animal is to be broken. John 19:36 says Jesus’ unbroken bones fulfilled Scripture. Numbers therefore participates in the Passover pattern fulfilled in Christ, although Exodus 12 and Psalm 34 are also relevant scriptural sources and John does not name Numbers alone.
