He Shall Be Called a Nazarene
Matthew 2 keeps pulling Jesus' childhood into Israel's story. Bethlehem recalls the promised Davidic ruler; Egypt recalls Israel's exodus; Herod's attack echoes Pharaoh-like violence; Jeremiah's Rachel weeps again; and Jesus eventually returns to the land. Matthew is not simply collecting random predictions—he is showing Jesus reliving and bringing to a climax the story of Israel.
After Herod dies, Joseph is told to return because those seeking the child’s life are dead—language that closely echoes Moses’ return instruction in Exodus 4:19. Fear of Archelaus redirects the family to Galilee, and Jesus grows up in Nazareth. Matthew then gives one of his most difficult fulfillment statements: “He shall be called a Nazarene,” attributed not to one prophet but to “the prophets.”
Where this fits in the story: the return language strengthens the Moses/Exodus pattern already running through the infancy narrative.
Where Scripture takes it next: Nazareth becomes part of Jesus’ public identity, including the later question of his hometown reception.
Evidence boundary: no Old Testament verse says verbatim, “He shall be called a Nazarene.” Proposed explanations include wordplay with Isaiah’s netser (“branch”), broader prophetic themes of despised lowliness, and other possibilities. None should be presented as certain. Matthew’s plural “prophets” may itself signal a thematic rather than single-text reference.
TESTED TRADITION / DISPUTED ALLUSION: some scholars argue Matthew’s “He shall be called a Nazarene” echoes Samson’s Nazirite-from-the-womb language and presents Jesus as the one who completes the salvation Samson only began.
