Good News, Glory, and the Shepherd Witnesses
In the fields outside Bethlehem, shepherds watched over their flocks at night. Suddenly, the angel of the Lord appeared, and the glory of God shone around them.
The wider biblical story comes into focus here. Good news, salvation, peace, God’s return to Zion, and the nations seeing salvation form a cluster echoed throughout Luke 2. A child associated with Davidic rule, joy, light, and peace strongly resonates with Isaiah 9, but Luke’s angel does not quote Isaiah 9 verbatim. The announcement of the Davidic Messiah to shepherds outside David’s city creates a natural shepherd-king resonance with David’s own origins.
