A woman whom Matthew deliberately calls Canaanite cries to the “Son of David” for her daughter. Jesus states Israel-first mission priority, yet her persistent faith receives his praise and her daughter is healed.

Where this fits in the story: “Canaanite” evokes one of Israel’s oldest outsider categories, making the woman’s recognition of Israel’s Messiah especially striking. The Abrahamic promise always carried a nations horizon.

Where Scripture takes it next: the Gospel ultimately expands from Israel-focused mission to discipleship among all nations.

Evidence boundary: the “dogs” saying is difficult and should not be softened by inventing an affectionate-pet meaning as though the diminutive solves the offense. The narrative’s tension, Israel-first order, and woman’s remarkable response all need to remain visible.

What this miracle reveals: Matthew calls the woman Canaanite; Mark calls her Greek and Syrophoenician by birth. Both make the boundary unmistakable. Her answer does not erase Israel’s priority but appeals to abundance—crumbs still reach the dogs—and her daughter is delivered at a distance. The hard saying should neither be softened away nor made harsher than the language requires.
