Joab Murders Amasa
Amasa fails to assemble Judah within David’s deadline. Joab later kills him by deception and resumes pursuit of Sheba, repeating the violence that has marked his career.
David’s final charge to Solomon groups Joab’s murders of Abner and Amasa together as bloodshed committed in peace, giving a later inspired moral interpretation of the violence narrated in 2 Samuel. The retrospective makes Joab’s guilt explicit rather than leaving the reader to infer only from David’s earlier reactions.
