David’s Charge concerning Shimei
In 1 Kings 2:1–12, the narrative focuses on david’s final instructions to solomon. This belongs to Solomon’s rise: David’s succession crisis gives way to the new king’s consolidation, request for wisdom, administration, and early prosperity. Read the section with an eye on the difference between God-given kingship and human ambition, and on the standards by which Solomon’s reign will later be measured.
David’s final charge to Solomon explicitly remembers Shimei’s curse during the flight from Absalom and treats the matter as still unresolved at David’s death. First Kings therefore reaches directly back to the 2 Samuel incident and shows how the episode remained part of the monarchy’s unfinished political and moral history.
