No Unequal Yoke: Temple, Idols, Belial, and God’s Covenant Presence
Paul warns against binding partnerships that compromise allegiance to God, arranging a series of contrasts: righteousness and lawlessness, light and darkness, Christ and Belial, believer and unbeliever, God’s temple and idols. He then weaves together Scripture from Leviticus, Ezekiel, Isaiah, and the Davidic promise to describe the church as the living God’s temple and to call for holy separation. This passage is broader than a marriage-only rule and should not be used to justify social contempt for unbelievers.
