False Shepherds and the Righteous Branch
The LORD condemns shepherds who scatter and destroy His flock, then promises to gather the remnant and provide faithful shepherds. The promise rises higher still: a righteous Branch will be raised to David, a King who reigns wisely, executes judgment and righteousness, and brings safety. His name is proclaimed as “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
Coming Savior connection: Jeremiah’s “righteous Branch” is a future Davidic king who reigns wisely, saves God’s people, and bears the astonishing name “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” The New Testament does not quote Jeremiah 23:5–6 with a formal fulfillment formula, but it repeatedly identifies Jesus as the Son of David and the promised Davidic king. Christian readers therefore see this Branch promise converging on Jesus, while the divine-name wording gives the passage an especially strong Christological depth that belongs in the deeper evidence layer.
