Mercy, Faithfulness, and the Covenant with David
Psalm 89 opens by praising the LORD’s mercy and faithfulness, then immediately names the covenant with David: God has sworn to establish David’s seed and throne through generations. That promise creates the theological problem the rest of the psalm will eventually confront.
The New Testament’s proclamation of Jesus as Son of David stands squarely inside this covenant trajectory. Acts 2 speaks of God’s oath to David concerning a descendant on his throne, and Luke announces an everlasting Davidic reign for Jesus. Those texts do not require Psalm 89:3–4 to be their only source, because the promise is spread across the Davidic covenant tradition, but they make the psalm’s messianic trajectory substantial and central.
