Victory News Becomes a Father’s Lament
The Cushite confirms that Absalom is dead. David withdraws in grief and cries that he wishes he had died instead of his son, turning a military victory into one of the book’s most painful scenes. This is a powerful gospel foreshadowing by contrast: David can only wish to die for his rebellious son; Jesus, the greater Son of David, actually bears sins for rebels. The New Testament does not quote David’s lament as a cross prophecy.
