You Are the Man
Nathan exposes David’s adultery and murder, rehearses God’s gifts, and announces consequences that mirror David’s hidden sins in public form. David confesses, and Nathan declares that the LORD has put away his sin while also announcing the child’s death.
Absalom’s public seizure of David’s concubines fulfills Nathan’s announced judgment that David’s hidden sexual sin would be answered openly before all Israel. The prediction and realization occur within the same book and use deliberately corresponding private/public language.
Psalm 51’s superscription explicitly places the psalm after Nathan came to David concerning Bathsheba, giving canonical voice to repentance following the confrontation of 2 Samuel 12. The psalm therefore supplies the inner theological response to the sin and rebuke narrated in Samuel.
