David Seeks Someone from Saul’s House
David asks whether anyone remains from Saul’s family so he can show covenant loyalty for Jonathan’s sake. Ziba identifies Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s disabled son, and David has him brought from Lo-debar.
David’s covenant kindness to Mephibosheth in 2 Samuel directly fulfills the pledged loyalty he had sworn to Jonathan’s house in 1 Samuel. The earlier covenant supplies the stated reason David seeks a surviving member of Jonathan’s family to whom he may show hesed.
The early notice of Mephibosheth’s injury prepares the reader for David’s later search for Jonathan’s surviving son and the restoration scene in chapter 9. The relationship is a deliberate same-book setup and payoff that links vulnerability, covenant loyalty, and royal kindness.
