Joab Murders Abner
Joab returns, rebukes David for letting Abner go, secretly recalls Abner, and kills him at Hebron in revenge for Asahel. David publicly disclaims responsibility and pronounces judgment on Joab’s house.
David’s charge to Solomon explicitly remembers Joab’s killing of Abner and Amasa and condemns the acts as bloodshed committed in peacetime. First Kings therefore supplies an inspired retrospective evaluation of Joab’s violence and confirms that the earlier murders remained morally unresolved at David’s death.
Abner is murdered at Hebron, a city Joshua had designated as a city of refuge, creating a striking geographic irony: a place associated with protection and due process becomes the site of unlawful bloodshed.
