The Amalekite Brings Saul’s Crown
David returns to Ziklag after defeating the Amalekites. An Amalekite arrives from Saul’s camp, claims that he killed Saul at Saul’s request, and presents the crown and bracelet. David tears his clothes and mourns rather than celebrating the death of the man who had been the LORD’s anointed.
Second Samuel opens as an immediate continuation of Saul and Jonathan’s deaths, bringing the news to David and preserving his lament over them. The later book therefore interprets the fall of Saul not with triumphalism but through David’s grief, loyalty, and transition into the next stage of the kingdom story.
The Amalekite’s report in 2 Samuel 1 must be read beside 1 Samuel 31, where Saul falls on his own sword after his armor-bearer refuses to kill him. The canonical comparison shows that the messenger’s self-serving version cannot simply replace the inspired account already narrated at the end of 1 Samuel.
