Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath
In 1 Kings 17:8–16, the narrative focuses on elijah and the widow of zarephath. This belongs to the Elijah cycle. Drought, provision, restored life, Carmel, rain, flight, Horeb, and prophetic succession reveal the LORD’s authority over life, weather, worship, kings, and prophets while Israel is being called away from Baal and back to covenant loyalty.
Jesus explicitly recalls Elijah being sent during the famine to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon, using the 1 Kings story to confront hometown presumption and to show that God’s prophetic mercy is not controlled by ethnic familiarity or local entitlement.
The witnesses’ power to shut heaven so that no rain falls strongly evokes Elijah’s drought ministry, especially when read with the New Testament’s explicit identification of Elijah’s prayer with the drought.
Elisha’s multiplication of the widow’s oil intentionally continues the provision pattern associated with Elijah and the widow of Zarephath. The two scenes show YHWH’s compassionate power continuing through prophetic succession while each narrative retains its own setting and details.
