The Midwives Fear God and Defy Pharaoh
Pharaoh summons the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, and commands them to kill Hebrew sons at birth while allowing daughters to live. The midwives, however, fear God and do not do what the king of Egypt commands. When Pharaoh questions them, they answer that the Hebrew women give birth before the midwife arrives.
The narrator’s emphasis is clear: the midwives fear God rather than Pharaoh, the people continue to multiply, and God deals well with the midwives and gives them households. Pharaoh then escalates the policy. Instead of speaking only to the midwives, he commands all his people to cast every Hebrew son into the Nile while letting every daughter live.
