Preparing to Encounter Holiness – Consecration Before Revelation
God spoke again to Moses, this time with a solemn tone: “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so the people will hear Me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you” (Exodus 19:9). This was not merely a personal conversation between God and Moses; it was an intentional display of divine authority, designed to establish Moses as God’s chosen mediator. But before the people could witness God's presence, they needed to prepare.
Moses was instructed to consecrate the people. They were to wash their clothes, abstain from sexual relations, and remain within strict boundaries set around the mountain. Anyone who crossed the boundary, human or animal, would be put to death. The severity of these instructions underscores one of the central truths of the chapter: God is holy, and to come into His presence requires reverence and purification.
