Numbers 32:1–42
Reuben and Gad ask for the conquered Transjordan land because it suits their livestock. Moses fears their request will discourage the nation just as the spies did at Kadesh and retells the earlier rebellion before agreeing to anything.
The tribes clarify that they will build protection for families and livestock but cross armed with Israel until the western land is secured. Their inheritance east of the Jordan is made conditional on shared responsibility for the conquest.
Moses states the conditions before Eleazar, Joshua, and the tribal leaders. If the eastern tribes fight through the conquest, they receive Gilead; if not, they must take land in Canaan. The arrangement is public and enforceable, not a private bargain.
Gad, Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh receive conquered territory and rebuild or rename towns. Israel now holds substantial land before crossing the Jordan, setting up later questions about unity between eastern and western tribes.
The eastern allotments in Joshua 13 continue the settlement granted to Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh under Moses. Joshua’s eastern allotment review therefore preserves the earlier Mosaic grant and places those territories inside the completed national inheritance record.
