Back to Bethel — Put Away the Foreign Gods and Return to the Place of Promise
After the violence at Shechem, God tells Jacob to arise and go to Bethel, the place where God appeared to him when he fled from Esau. Jacob responds by ordering his household to put away foreign gods, cleanse themselves, change garments, and go with him to build an altar. The foreign gods are buried under the oak near Shechem. It is possible that Rachel’s stolen household gods from Genesis 31 belong to this larger household purge, but Genesis 35 does not explicitly identify them, so that connection should remain possible rather than certain. As Jacob travels, the terror of God falls upon the surrounding cities and they do not pursue him, providing protection after Jacob’s fear in Genesis 34. At Bethel Jacob builds the altar, explicitly closing the loop begun in Genesis 28. Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, dies and is buried nearby, quietly reconnecting the story to the earlier generation and to Rebekah’s journey into Canaan.
