Cities of Refuge and the Setting of the Law
Deuteronomy 4:41–49 is the movement “Cities of Refuge and the Setting of the Law.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;” It closes with: “And all the plain on this side Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah.”
Within the book’s larger story, this section advances several important biblical threads. Priesthood and Mediation: Cities of refuge embody ordered justice and protection from blood vengeance.
