Judges 1:10–20
Judah’s campaign moves through Jerusalem, Hebron, and Debir, and the story pauses over Caleb’s household. Othniel wins Debir and Achsah asks her father for springs as well as land, closely repeating material already told in Joshua. For a new reader, that repetition is important: Judges does not begin a disconnected era but deliberately carries unresolved conquest and inheritance stories forward from Joshua.
The Kenites settle with Judah, Hormah is taken, and Judah gains important Philistine cities, yet the chapter immediately introduces limits: iron chariots remain formidable and Benjamin does not drive the Jebusites from Jerusalem. The mixed report is the point—real victories sit beside incomplete obedience. That tension becomes the seedbed for the compromise that dominates the book.
Judges retells Caleb’s possession of Hebron and the removal of the Anakite clans, continuing the same family conquest tradition already narrated in Joshua and showing direct literary continuity.
