Israel Demands a King
Start here: As Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges, but they were corrupt, taking bribes and perverting justice. The elders of Israel gathered and demanded a king to govern them, desiring to be like the nations around them. Samuel prayed to the Lord, who told him that the people were not rejecting Samuel, but rejecting God as their King. God instructed Samuel to listen to their request but to solemnly warn them about what having a king would entail.
Canonical window: Israel’s request for a king develops the book’s central kingship question. Saul is genuinely chosen and empowered, yet his repeated failure to hear and obey the LORD shows why Israel needs a king whose rule is aligned with God’s will. The connection cards below show the specific Scripture links and how strongly each one is supported. This overview does not turn every similarity into a prophecy or type.
