The Old Serpent Identified as the Devil and Satan
Revelation 12:4–17 traces the dragon’s war from the threatened male child to the woman and finally to the rest of her offspring who keep God’s commandments and hold the testimony of Jesus. The chapter interprets the ancient serpent’s hostility as a continuing conflict against Messiah and God’s faithful people, while repeatedly showing divine preservation and the dragon’s limited time.
Revelation 12:7–12 depicts war in heaven as Michael and his angels cast down the dragon, explicitly identified as the old serpent, Devil, and Satan. Heaven celebrates the accuser’s defeat through the blood of the Lamb and the faithful testimony of believers who do not love their lives unto death. The scene places spiritual conflict under the decisive victory of the Lamb.
Revelation 12:9 explicitly identifies the great dragon as “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan.” The wording reaches back to the serpent of Genesis 3 and gives Revelation’s conflict an Eden-to-end-of-history horizon. What was introduced as the deceiving serpent is now named as the cosmic adversary who deceives the whole world.
Genesis 3 calls the tempter a serpent but does not name him Satan. Revelation 12 later speaks of “that old serpent” and identifies him as the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. Revelation supplies the later biblical identification that Genesis itself does not spell out.
Jude shows Michael contending with the devil. Revelation later shows Michael and his angels fighting the dragon—and Revelation tells us plainly that the dragon is the Devil and Satan. The scenes are different, but the same Michael-versus-devil conflict appears again.
Isaiah 27:1 → REV 12:9: Revelation deliberately reuses Isaiah’s imagery or promise in a Christological context.
Job 26 places Sea and the fleeing serpent beneath God’s power, while Revelation 12 develops dragon/serpent imagery and explicitly identifies its dragon with the devil and Satan. Job therefore contributes to the canon’s chaos-serpent field, but the fleeing serpent in Job should not simply be equated with Satan.
Job’s Leviathan is an untamable chaos-creature under God’s authority; Revelation’s dragon stands in the canon’s later monster/serpent trajectory and is explicitly identified there as Satan. The connection shows development in biblical imagery without warranting the simple equation “Leviathan is Satan.”
