Joy, Spirit, and the Great Reversal
Mary went quickly to the hill country to visit Elizabeth. The moment she entered the house, Elizabeth’s baby leapt in her womb.
The wider biblical story comes into focus here. Mary explicitly names Abraham and his seed as the horizon of God’s remembered mercy, locating Jesus’ coming inside the Abrahamic promise. Mary's song announces the hungry filled and rich sent empty; Jesus now blesses the hungry and pronounces woe on the full/rich. Luke's reversal theme is internal and unmistakable. The reversal sung by Mary and announced in Jesus' blessings/woes becomes vivid narrative: the hungry sufferer is comforted and the luxurious rich man experiences want.
