Laish Becomes Dan; an Illicit Priesthood Endures
Dan attacks unsuspecting Laish, burns it, rebuilds the city, and gives it the tribal name Dan. The tribe establishes the stolen image and a priestly line identified through Jonathan, while the legitimate house of God remains at Shiloh. A textual problem in verse 30—Moses or Manasseh—makes this section especially important for manuscript study.
Judges establishes Dan as a northern center of illicit worship long before Jeroboam later places a golden calf there. The objects and institutions are not identical, but the place develops a persistent canonical association with rival worship.
