Guarding Against Idolatry
Deuteronomy 12:29–32 is the movement “Guarding Against Idolatry.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land;” It closes with: “What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”
Scripture also places this passage inside a wider canonical network. Genesis 22 frames Abraham’s command concerning Isaac as a test and stops the sacrifice before Isaac is killed, providing a ram instead. Deuteronomy 12:31 later explicitly rejects worship practices in which sons and daughters are burned in the fire. The canonical contrast prevents Genesis 22 from functioning as an endorsement of child sacrifice.
