Jephthah Rehearses Israel’s Land History
Before fighting, Jephthah negotiates. He retells Israel’s route around Edom and Moab, the defeat of Sihon, and Israel’s long possession of the disputed land, arguing that Ammon’s claim misstates history. Whatever readers conclude about every chronological detail, the passage shows Jephthah grounding his case in remembered Torah history before turning to war.
Jephthah’s diplomatic argument retells Israel’s encounter with Sihon and the capture of Amorite territory recorded in Numbers 21, using Torah history to answer Ammon’s land claim. The later judge explicitly appeals to the same historical episode to defend Israel’s possession of the disputed territory.
Jephthah’s account of Sihon also tracks Moses’ retrospective in Deuteronomy 2: Israel sought passage, Sihon resisted, and the LORD gave the Amorite king and his land into Israel’s hand.
