A Midianite Dream Strengthens Gideon
God knows Gideon is still afraid and gives him another reassurance. Gideon and Purah enter the edge of the Midianite camp and overhear a dream about a barley loaf overturning a tent; the Midianite interpretation announces Gideon’s victory. Gideon’s response is worship. In context the barley loaf represents Gideon’s surprising threat, not a hidden identification with Jesus as the Bread of Life. Tradition tested: some devotional readings make the barley loaf a picture of Jesus as the Bread of Life. The dream itself interprets the loaf in relation to Gideon’s coming victory, and no New Testament text links it to John 6, so this study does not present that proposal as biblical foreshadowing.
