Gideon Tears Down Baal’s Altar
Before Gideon confronts Midian, God tells him to confront idolatry at home. He tears down his father’s Baal altar and Asherah by night, builds an altar to the LORD, and offers the prescribed bull. When the townspeople demand Gideon’s death, Joash challenges Baal to defend himself, and Gideon receives the taunting name Jerubbaal—“let Baal contend.” Tested Christian tradition: Ambrose and other early Christian interpreters read Gideon’s sacrifice as a figure of Christ. That tradition is historically real, but no New Testament writer identifies Gideon’s offering as a Christ type, so the site preserves it as patristic interpretation rather than inspired explanation.
