Gideon Meets the Angel of the LORD
Gideon is threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it when the Angel of the LORD calls him a mighty man of valor. Gideon questions God’s presence, protests his insignificance, and receives the promise “I will be with thee” plus a confirming sign. The scene deliberately recalls Moses’ call in Exodus 3–4: commission, objection, divine presence, and sign all shape Gideon’s beginning. Tested Christian tradition: Ambrose of Milan read Gideon threshing in the winepress under the “shadow” of the cross and future Incarnation, and treated the winepress as an image of the Church gathering the separated grain. That is genuine early Christian interpretation, but Judges itself says Gideon is hiding the wheat from Midian, and no New Testament writer identifies the winepress as a Christ symbol.
