Remembering God’s Faithfulness and Warnings
In Joshua 23, the aged leader charges Israel to remain faithful, avoid idolatry and covenant entanglement, and remember that God’s promises and warnings are equally certain.
Joshua insists that covenant curses are as reliable as covenant blessings, echoing Deuteronomy’s warning that persistent disobedience can result in losing the good land. Covenant faithfulness therefore includes warning as well as promise.
Joshua’s statement that not one thing failed of YHWH’s good promises is echoed by Solomon’s later testimony that not one word failed, creating a strong verbal link across Israel’s settlement history.
