A Witness, Not a Rebellion
Joshua 22 sends the eastern tribes home after they fulfill their military obligation. A large altar by the Jordan nearly causes civil war until the eastern tribes explain that it is a witness to shared covenant identity, not a rival sacrificial altar.
Genesis 31 uses a heap and pillar as a witness to a boundary covenant between Jacob and Laban; Joshua 22’s altar likewise functions as testimony between separated Israelite groups rather than as a rival sacrificial center. The pattern is comparable without making the events identical.
