God’s Promises Fulfilled
Joshua 21 assigns towns and pasturelands to the Levites from the tribal inheritances. It closes with a major theological summary: the LORD gave Israel the land, gave them rest, and not one good promise failed.
Genesis 15 gives the land promise covenant form; Joshua 21 declares that the LORD gave Israel the land and that none of His good promises failed. Joshua marks a real historical fulfillment stage while later Scripture continues to develop land, rest, and inheritance.
Solomon echoes Joshua’s fulfillment formula when he declares that not one word failed of all YHWH’s good promise, linking Israel’s later settled rest to the same covenant faithfulness celebrated in Joshua.
Hebrews looks back to the rest associated with Joshua and argues that it was not God’s final promised rest, because Scripture later speaks of another day and a remaining rest for God’s people.
