Allotment for the Tribe of Manasseh
Joshua 17 details Manasseh’s inheritance, including the allotment received by Zelophehad’s daughters, and records both incomplete possession of Canaanite towns and Joseph’s tribes asking for more territory.
Zelophehad’s daughters receive land in Joshua because the LORD had already ruled through Moses that daughters could inherit when a man had no son. Joshua explicitly says the women received inheritance according to YHWH’s command to Moses, making the earlier legal ruling operative in the land.
The inheritance of Zelophehad’s daughters also reflects Numbers 36, which protects tribal land from being transferred through marriage. The Joshua allotment shows the daughters’ inheritance operating within the tribal-preservation condition established at the close of Numbers.
